James Augustus is just an ordinary sort of young man who is whiling away the tedium of a wet Saturday afternoon by making himself as comfortable as possible in the seclusion of his 'den'. He feels the security of his bachelor stronghold but, before his affairs this evening are over, there is reason to doubt his stronghold is so impregnable as he believes at the moment.
