PLOT

· Exposition - background information about the story and the characters that is necessary to understand the play

· Protagonist - character whose motivations set the plot into action and conflict

· Antagonist - character whose motivations directly oppose those of the protagonist

· Root Conflict - the single, underlying problem the play seeks to resolve

· Root Action - (also called "spine" or "central motive") the process by which the root conflict is resolved

· Inciting Incident - the event that sets things out of balance, and leads the action toward the resolution.

· Climax - (also called "crisis") the moment the resolution becomes inevitable

· Resolution - conflict resolved

· Denouement - anything that occurs after the resolution; tying up any loose ends

· Plot - the combination of all of the above
